Wullinkama Lower Basic

In February 2025, a dedicated team of 40 volunteers from across Ireland, the UK, and Australia came together to make a lasting impact in Wullinkama, The Gambia.
The Wullinkama 2025 Project was an ambitious and heartfelt project aimed at enhancing educational opportunities and community facilities in the region. Over the course of just eight days, our passionate volunteers worked tirelessly to bring transformative change to Wullinkama Lower Basic School:

Construction of three brand-new classrooms, providing a safe and inspiring environment for learning.

Establishment of a community shop to support local commerce

Creation of a bantaba (shaded area) for community gatherings and events.

Development of a playground area, giving children a dedicated space to play and grow.

Refurbishment of existing classrooms to ensure they remain safe and functional for generations to come.

Revitalisation of the school’s library, ensuring students have access to essential learning resources.

Construction of a sheltered area for students and teachers to gather and learn in comfort.

Establishment of a vegetable garden, promoting sustainable practices and nutrition.

This build marks a significant milestone in United Friends for Education’s journey—since 2022, we have provided access to education for over 1,200 children who otherwise would not have had the opportunity to learn in a dedicated school environment.
